NETWORK GENERAL DETECTS NETWORK BREAK-INS WITH
REAL-TIME BURGLAR ALARM
New CyberCop Security System Combats External and Internal Network Intrusions
Menlo Park, Calif. - September 15, 1997 - Network General Corporation (NASDAQ: NETG) today announced CyberCopVisibilityTM,an intrusion detection system that safeguards corporate assets by performing real-time surveillance of network traffic. The CyberCop system protects networks from external and internal attacks by providing a "high tech burglar alarm" capable of alerting companies when the security of their networks is breached by unauthorized intruders. Network General is also offering a comprehensive suite of network security and product support services to enhance the customer's security environment.
"CyberCop contributes to our commitment to provide Total Network Visibility ®. CyberCop helps our customers see network activity which is not consistent with security policies and procedures," said Les Denend, president and chief executive officer at Network General. "CyberCop will help the IT manager develop the confidence to deploy network applications and features that keep their organization competitive."
"Intrusion detection is a crucial issue in security because even the best systems and defenses are broken into eventually," said Dan Farmer, noted security expert and creator of the first public domain scanning tool. "When used in addition to passive defense measures, such as firewalls, intrusion detection provides an active security component that alarms IS at the time intruders are trying to get into the system, before damage is done."
"Our customers perceive a growing threat to their business operations. Many companies are experiencing a significant increase in the number of attacks against their networks," said Nancy Blair, director of product development for Network General's Internet business unit. "The 1997 Computer Crime Survey sponsored by the Computer Security Institute and Federal Bureau of Investigation indicates that the frequently cited statistic - 80% of information security problems are internal - is no longer accurate. While the threat from internal users or intruders masquerading as trusted insiders has not diminished, the number of external attacks is growing due to widespread Internet use. CyberCop alerts network operations personnel to suspicious activity within seconds, allowing them to immediately shut down the intruder without interrupting critical business processes."
Most hacker attacks follow a pattern and require time to penetrate the network perimeter, explore the network, identify a target, and exploit it. The CyberCop product short-circuits this process by detecting early reconnaissance and snooping activities. Once the CyberCop system detects an intruder, the system sounds an alarm through e-mail, pager or screen prompts, so that action can be taken immediately. Such dynamic capabilities make the CyberCop system a strong complement to existing static security defenses, such as firewalls, encryption, and authentication, and make it a necessary component of any robust security architecture.
With its high level of performance, the CyberCop system is ideal for internal deployment and also works well in conjunction with perimeter security systems. In both ways, the CyberCop solution provides extraordinary security visibility into the datastream.
About the CyberCop Product
Placed at key locations throughout a network, from LAN segments and dial-up modem servers to connections to the Internet or other wide-area networks, the CyberCop system's sensors unobtrusively analyze the datastream for suspicious activity. Once it detects this activity, the CyberCop product alerts IS professionals and simultaneously records data in permanent logs and Sniffer® Analyzer trace files. IS professionals can then use these Sniffer trace files to build trend analysis information or as evidence to prove that improper use of the network occurred.
Using advanced intrusion detection technology, the CyberCop system recognizes over 170 kinds of network and host-based intrusions originating from either inside or outside the corporate network. The CyberCop product is an adaptable solution that accrues the intelligence and historical data necessary to identify and thwart increasingly sophisticated hacker attacks. The CyberCop solution incorporates technology from WheelGroup Corporation, a recognized leader in network-based intrusion detection, and is the initial offering of a recent technology partnership between WheelGroup and Network General. The product's intrusion sensors are easily configured and new breaches can be added to the system as they are discovered to ensure ongoing protection of valuable data, hardware, and software assets.
To ensure its own security, the CyberCop solution possesses secure user identification and authentication, encrypted communications and messaging, and multiple layers of security. The product has out-of-the-box installation, an easy-to-use browser-based interface, and location-independent access to alarm information.
The CyberCop system will start shipping to customers in December, 1997. Pricing information will be provided at a later date.
